Long term care servicesIn Kentucky, where more than 114,000 people ages 50 to 64 lack health insurance, AARP is asking Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear to commit to Medicaid expansion.

The federal government would pay for the expansion of Medicaid to cover individuals with annual incomes up to $15,856 for the first three years; the state would pay up to 10 percent of the cost of the expansion by 2020. The governor and state lawmakers must sign on to the plan.

The expansion, if adopted, would also extend coverage to roughly 11,000 uninsured veterans.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation estimates that the state could save between $140 million and $828 million through 2019 by expanding Medicaid coverage.
